Palomar StarLux Pulsed Light Treatment

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) therapy is a new technology offering a minimally invasive, non-surgical way to treat various areas of the body affected by sun damage, broken blood vessels, and unwanted hair. It is the most advanced system developed by Palomar Technologies, the industry leader in pulsed light therapy.  It is particularly effective in the treatment of unwanted hair, acne rosacea, and facial rejuvenation - the “photofacial”.  The face, neck, chest, arms, back, and legs can all be treated.

The StarLux Pulsed Light treatment works by emitting pulses of intense light that are absorbed by the hair follicles, undesired blood vessels of rosacea or pigmented age spots, which results in improvement of the conditions treated.

Pulsed light systems and lasers are very similar, but Palomar Pulsed Light Systems use a much larger treatment window than most lasers. This spreads light over a wider area of skin and allows faster coverage of the skin and quicker treatments as a result.

What are the benefits?
  • Ease of use
  • Low risk
  • Quick treatment time
  • Minimal downtime or pain

What can I expect during or after the treatment?
Your treatment provider will move the handpiece over your skin, pulsing it all the while. Each pulse will send a beam of light through your skin. A flashing light, an audible tone, and a mild sensation on the skin will tell you when the handpiece is being pulsed.

Immediately after treatment, you can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling. This usually last 2-24 hours, and can be soothed with cold gel or ice packs. You will first see a gradual decrease in redness. The treated skin will feel softer and vary less in tone. Fine lines and wrinkles will also improve, along with fading of pigmentation and age spots and a reduction in pore size. Rosacea sufferers will see a marked reduction in breakouts, and in some cases may be able to decrease or discontinue their medication. Results improve with each treatment and improve gradually over time. Most people require about 5 treatments. Those with more complicated conditions may need more.
